This course provides training in the most current HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Privacy and Security Rules and the HITECH (Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health) Act. Designed for leaders, this course delivers two levels of training: the complete HIPAA and HITECH foundation and the leadership knowledge to build and manage a compliance program. It presents the relevant, practical, and current HIPAA information in a question and answer format with real-life scenarios.

This training covers:

• The roles and responsibilities of the Privacy Officer and the Security Officer
• Business associates and the business associate agreements (BAAs) required before they handle protected health information (PHI)
• Risk assessments and how they identify and reduce risks to PHI
• Policies, procedures, and the Book of Evidence, including how long compliance records must be retained
• Proper handling and transportation of PHI and electronic PHI (ePHI)
• The HITECH Act, including business associate liability and federal breach notification requirements
• How to handle a data breach, including determining whether a breach occurred and meeting the required notification timelines
• The civil and criminal penalties for HIPAA violations
• How to respond to a HIPAA complaint
• What a HIPAA audit is and how to prepare for and handle one
• Current federal requirements, including the 2026 update requiring a Notice of Privacy Practices to address substance use disorder records under the federal Part 2 rule
